Technological Instruction & Support

ChevyCat studies the Internet.

I have over 20 years’ experience in the software and e-commerce industry, in technical writing, editing, indexing, online assistance, taxonomies, and usability. I’ve videotaped real users try to do real tasks in a software application, and fall helplessly into interface “usability pits,” unable to climb out. I know how to interpret a software application and write instructions so that actual humans can use it.

When I started as a perma-temp at Microsoft in 1988, we were still using UNIX. Only Macs had graphical user interfaces, and only the military, universities and software companies were on this newfangled network called the Internet. I’ve worked with Windows since before it was released, but I’ve chosen a Mac for my home computer since 1988. I’m comfortable in both operating systems and their applications, as well as Android and iOS devices.

In my 14 years as a professional Librarian, every single day I help real people learn to master technology and the Internet to help them get on with their lives – write resumes, fill in government forms, send email, edit photographs, create websites, go on social media, use their smartphones and tablets, and read e-books and e-magazines and much more through their public library’s free digital resources.

I believe technology is here to serve us, and not vice versa.
