Assignment 1: BOOK INDEX EXAMPLE OF FAME OR SHAME
Please photocopy a selection of a book index that you think is an especially shining example of a good index or an especially reprehensible example of a bad index. (Hint: it's easier to find bad ones.) Please do not hand in more than two photocopied pages (you can cut and paste if you need to).
Annotate your photocopied page(s), or attach a separate page, to indicate and evaluate particular index entries or sections .
Use the "Keys to a Good Book Index" handout's criteria as a starting point for your evaluation. If there are additional criteria that you would like to discuss, please feel free to do so.
You must list and give examples of at least two different criteria of evaluation.
Note: Because "Too many locators" is the most common flaw, if you choose that as one of your criteria you must show an exceptionally bad example -- more than 25 locators -- or you must list three different criteria of evaluation.
